Best ever at each weight class

Best NCAA wrestlers to ever wrestle their particular weight class (assuming each can only be named once even if they wrestled multiple weight classes).  And I’m including only the current weight classes (would be interesting to make a list of previous weights as well).

125 - Spencer Lee

133 - Logan Steiber

141 - Zain Retherford

149 - Yianni Diakamaholis

157 - Kyle Dake

165 - David Taylor

174 - Carter Starocci

184 - Aaron Brooks

197 - Cael Sanderson

285 - Gable Steveson

It's not that difficult to blend-in the weight classes prior to the 1998 seven-pound increase (1970-1998).  Or, if you're adventurous, include the eras prior to 1970.  This covers you back to 1952, when ten weight classes were introduced.

  • 115/115/118/125
  • 123/123/126/133
  • 130/130/134/141
  • 137/137/142/149
  • 147/145/150/157
  • 157/152/158/165
  • 167/167/167/174
  • 177/177/177/184
  • 191/191/190/197

If you want to get overly precise, I think it goes like this:

Would it not make more sense to swap Retherford and Diakomihalis?  Retherford was 5th in his lone season at 141 and a 3x champ 2x hodge winner at 149.  Meanwhile Diakomihalis has two chips at each weight.  Also should JB be there at either 157 or 165?

Modern weight class parade of hammers

125 Spencer Lee
133 Logan Stieber
141 Kyle Dake
149 Zain Retherford
157 Jason Nolf
165 Alex Deirhringer
174 Ed Ruth
184 Cael Sanderson
197 Bo Nikal
285 Gable Stevenson

9 of the 10 have Hodge trophies. The lone exception has 2 losses and a medical forfeit in 4 seasons. Recency bias? Sure. The weights help dictate that.

If you are gonna put Dake at 141 might as well put DT at 165

When did Nolf, Dieringer and Ruth win Hodges?

174 Ben Askren - 2x Hodge

If we are talking about these guys at their apex here are a few more that should be considered: John Smith (wrestled 134 in college so would slot into the 141 spot currently), Tom Brands (wrestled 134 in college so would slot into the 141 spot currently), Dan Gable (wrestled 137 so would slot into the 141 or 149 spot)

In a third rate conference with plenty of bums from the Southwest Missouri State Open sprinkled in there.

He also lost to Pendleton what, 6 times?

When DT and Ruth wrestled it showed me that Ruth couldn't handle elite scrambling.

Askren would wipe the floor with him.
