100%...

that is not limited to one ideology...

Not at all.

In the time prior to widespread social media deployment, if you had a violent weirdo in your town, you had one guy who might have his outlook ameliorated by interaction with the rest of the town.

In social media today, this weirdo will find a like minded group of weirdos online who normalize and encourage his behavior as normal.

Attitudes become entrenched like a religious cult.
Anyone 'not of the body' is an enemy.
Disagreeing with the group can easily lead to ostracization and expulsion.
For many people this *is* their social group and removal would be emotionally difficult, so they bend the knee even though they have doubts.

Add in the COVID period of isolation and these social media trends accelerated.

Reach and immediacy.

it the time frame of the cosmos?

not even a fraction of the time one of our adorable little basic neurons takes to start firing...

quit thinking so small...

There's no agenda in showing that social media is making people more extreme in their views.

we used to flay people alive and hang them in the town square in a cage so everyone could watch them rot as a reminder to not question authority...

is social media that extreme?

is social media that extreme?

It's reach is far more vast and it happens instantly.

Oh, you think the internet is your ally.
But you merely adopted the net; I was born in it, molded by it.
I didn't see a CRT screen until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!
The chat rooms betray you, because they belong to me!

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Paper tape on fire off the shoulder of a Teletype Model 33.
I watched punch cards flitter in the dark near the IBM model 711.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

adorable...

first school shooting happened in the 1850's...

first school shooting where children were shot was in the 1890's...

we used to raid and slaughter entire villages and be celebrated for it...

if someone stepped out of line, we used to be able to handle it all on our own and in most cases be celebrated for it...

the world used to be a much more violent place on a daily basis and little things like a few people people getting killed was not big enough news to even reach the next grass hut...

the absolute main thing that has changed is an over abundance of self-importance...

Maybe you didn't read my post. But your comment here is 100% confirmation of what I wrote.

Thanks for that - kind of.

Strange that you are using the word "we" for all these things you didn't do. You do realize you weren't part of 'we', right?

Not sure I welcome confirmation from a guy who keeps saying 'adorable' - that is getting way weird, too. Maybe reconsider that.

... except that harmony didn't really ever "prevail" in our society when guns were common. It's a nice thought, but it's as mythical as a yeti.

It's more of a tale of the guns prevailing than anything else.

  • When one group had the guns, they made the law.
  • When the guns became readily available to the lawless, gun violence ensued.

Little has changed since then.

Guns have always been readily available to the lawless . Know matter what laws you pass the lawless will have their guns.  Taking guns away from law abiding citizens will never affect the lawless. Actually the lawless love gun laws.
